The yearly service is described fully in Leviticus 16. It began with the selection of two goats for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering (verse 5). Lots were cast upon the two goats to determine which one would represent the Lord and which would be the scapegoat or Azazel (verse 8).
The High Priest then killed the Lord?s goat and took its blood inside the second apartment or Holy Place, (Sometimes called Most Holy Place) where some of it was sprinkled on and before the Mercy Seat, thus making atonement for the Holy Place (verses 15, 16). He would next proceed to make atonements for the Tabernacle of the Congregation, (first apartment) and the altar (presumably the one in the courtyard, since the other altar was inside the Tabernacle of the Congregation).
Finally, the High Priest would symbolically place all the sins of the Israelites on the head of the other goat and banish it away into the wilderness (verse 21). |

The casting of lots on the two goats indicated the fact that man had nothing to do with selecting who represented God. The process was dictated totally by God. (Note in verse 9 that it is called ?the Lord?s lot?.) Satan presents himself as man?s representative to God (See Job 1:6, 7), and Jesus presents Himself to do the same. God chooses Jesus.
The goat represented Jesus and the High Priest also represented Jesus. Therefore, the High Priest killing the goat was indicative of Jesus laying down His own life for sinners. (See John 10:17, 18) The blood sprinkled on and before the Mercy Seat represented Jesus offering the merits of His shed blood to His Father as a substitute for man?s sinful life. (The life of the flesh is in the blood and ? it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul. - Lev. 17:11).
Upon receiving acknowledgement that His sacrifice was adequate to rescue man from sin Jesus returned to the Tabernacle of the Congregation (Church) to make atonement for it. On the Day of Pentecost He returned to His disciples in Spirit form and became at-one with them. Shortly after that He moved out of the Tabernacle of the Congregation to the courtyard where He began the work of at-one-ment for the Gentiles.
Finally, when He has gained the victory by removing the sinful inclinations from His people and by giving all men the opportunity for salvation, He will be able to banish Satan (the scapegoat) into the wilderness, away from all communication with mankind (See Revelation 20:1-3), and the whole creation will be free from sin. |
