Homeschooling(HS)....I first scoffed at the notion..maybe like you are now. But as I have researched and talked with other parents, I have become more aware of schooling options and the pros/cons of each. Many people have the mental picture of children stuffed in a house all day with no interaction from other children, being bored to death, etc, etc. This is simply not true. Well, maybe for SOME families :-) Homeschooling is actually a viable option and when done right and in good consciousness, can equal or in some cases, exceed, public schooling. . Is homeschooling right for everyone? NO!! For one reason or another, it may not work out. But that is the beauty of free choice. You can choose public schools, private schools, homeschooling, or combine 2 or more of them(not at the same time of course!!). I hesitate to even mention here why homeschooling is NOT something to be feared or ridiculed. Which is why I won't. I will instead, provide links as to what homeschooling is all about. I will however mention that homeschooling is not just that. There are many subcategories one can delve into. There is structured schooling (like in a classroom but at home), unschooling (no formal structure, workbooks, etc), Montesorri, Waldorf...it goes on and on. What I am most interested in for Kira right now is Christian home/unschooling. .

All your children shall be taught by the Lord, and great shall be the peace of your children -Isaiah 54:13
Ah!! The age old question...and the one thing SO many HS'ers get so tired of hearing about! I now respond with a question of my own...what do you mean by "socialization"? Generally, the answers come back along the lines of learning to get along with other kids like talking, taking turns, learning good behavior, etc. Quite frankly..most of the time the issue is SOCIALIZING. True socialization involves passing values of society down to the child...why would I want a bunch of 4, 5 or whatever aged children, passing on so called values of society on to my children? Honestly, children's values are "the law of the jungle"...not what we see as true values. And I love the seemingly common retort of "well, I know so and so down the street who homeschools and they have a child who is introverted and shy!!" ;-)...well know what? I know many PUBLIC schooled (or private, etc) that have those VERY same children!! And know something else? I was in public school ALL of my life and I STILL have that personality!! I also knew several schoolmates in my life who were in school all their lives and you would have never have thought that, if you were basing it on a personality trait of "extrovert". Off my soap-box now ;-) Here are some great links below on socialization and homeschooling...and for those who just have to see a "study"..there is even a research article!! Oh, and on another note....I see from experience (with my own sibling as well as my children), that getting along with siblings is HARDER and requires more skill and patience than getting along with people at school! Something to think about! Now of course if you have an only child, this doesn't apply ;-) But otherwise, my children have learned proper "manners" and interaction with each other!! PLEASE don't think for a minute, I am bashing those who choose outside schooling. If God leads me to, I WILL send my kids to school systems as well (public or private), as I will not let fear of the world or world system govern how I raise my children!! And I don't see myself as superior or "better" than those who send their kids to school. Not at all. I also don't think I can "do a better job". We simply want to take responsibility for our children's education and upbringing....and for now, homeschooling seems right for US :)
BUT...what about socialization????
