Meet our dogs
Dakota is . . .

A very loveable Australian shepherd who was adpoted by Lori  in October of 1997 while in her third year of veterinary school.  He was my first "patient" I practiced drawing blood on at the animal shelter..he tried to be sooo brave and had the sweetest face...I immediately fell in love with him.  He had come from an abused home :-(  He was about 10 months old at the time and came to live in our 2 bedroom apt in Columbus with our two cats!!  He is a solid red aussie (not too common these days...you mostly see the "merles") and has his full tail (usually are docked or not born with one).  He was born at the end of 1996.

FUN FACTS:
Dakota prefers females (we think a male abused him)..but he is generally friendly once he gets to know you

His nickmames are "Dakotes, Kota, and bubs"

He is VERY intelligent and learned how to sit in 5 mins. He also shakes, heels, plays  dead, rolls over. He is very obedient  (as long as he isn't in hot pursuit of a squirrel or bunny :-)

He is "possessive" of us, his family...and guards us accordingly :-)

He also has the strong aussie herding instinct and will herd just about anything!

Aussies are super intelligent and quite energetic.  They are NOT a breed for everyone! They require a lot of human
interaction and if their energy is not channeled properly, they may become destructive.

If buying a puppy from a breeder, make sure the breeder certifies eyes,  hips, etc.  The merle coat pattern in aussies can be linked to eye disorders so beware when    picking out these.  While aussies are protective and wary of  strangers..they should never be aggressive/viscious.

Arizona is:

an Aussie mix adopted last year also by Lori from the shelter she started working at.  He was about 5 at the time. He is very sweet and loves to "smile" at you.  His one fault...he LOVES to dig holes in our yard and he is fond of sneaking into whatever happens to be left up on our drainboard!
Him and Dakota get along fairly well.  We will include a picture as soon as we have one!!
