Cloth diapering is SOOOO different than what it used to be. There are so many more options now. When Don and I first thought about what we were going to use with Kira, we quickly dismissed cloth. Too messy, too gross, too time-consuming, etc, etc. But when Kira was about 5 months old, I was so tired of all the diaper rashes that wouldn't seem to clear up. I was sickened at how many disposables were being tossed out each week, and for us, the money being wasted was ridiculous!! I was at a brestfeeding support group one Monday morning and I happened to glance down at the woman next to me changing her daughter's diaper. I was intrigued by the diaper she was using (it was like the ones pictured above) I asked her what that was and she replied...cloth diapers!!! "NO WAY" I replied!! "Where are the pins? and the yucky vinyl pants?" Anyway, the conversation that ensued sparked something and I went home to research it on the internet.
That day was a turning point for us. I found out not only the incredible variety of cloth diapers, but I was swept away (and completely confused-LOL!!!) by all of the CD (cloth diaper) jargon. SOOO much to learn...but learn I did. Thanks to many kind mothers who helped me with my millions of questions, I started to buy a little here and a little there. Some things worked ok, others didn't . I learned about different wash methods (did you know a diaper service isn't even needed?? ) Your washing machine can handle all of it!! There really wasn't even that much more laundry involved. Just 2 extra loads a week for me. And the best part is Kira's diaper rashes cleared up!! To be fair though, she will occasionally get a bad one if she sits in a poopy diaper too long because I don't notice it. But the constant rash after rash went away!! Know what now orks best for us? The basic prefold and good ole diaper pins!! I love to pin and it is sooo easy to learn. In the long run, it is much cheaper than the other types of diapers( the ones that close with velcro or snaps). But even if you choose the more "luxurious" route, it is still cheaper than disposables...trust me!!! If you are new to all of this, look over this site. I hope it helps you to sort things out. Remember that everyone has their own favorites. Every baby is shaped differently and so what works for some is a complete flop for others!! Have fun!! If you have any comments/questions, please e-mail me. I will do my best to help!! Oh! We also like kissaluvs fitted diapers for outings with Elijah and for a newborn, a simple washrag folded in thirds and tucked into a velcro wrap like proraps is not only cheap, but soooo convenient :) We did this for Eli when he was baby and will also be doing it for this new little one when she arrives!! |
