My Railroading Adventures
By Donovan in Dallas
The first edition of the layout was based on Joplin, Missouri.  It was the most prototypical layout I have ever attempted.  The track plan was based on research Blair Kooistra and I did in Joplin one early Friday morning in the Spring of 2003.

The layout was beautiful, I liked the look very much.  But it was lacking in OPS and I thought the bright colors were not very Missouri like.  (Now, as I prepare for a FEC based layout I am hoping I can re-capture the over all look of this layout, since I think the colors would represent FLA quite nicely).

I began re-building the layout to loosely represent Springfield in Septmeber of 2003.  A decision I still question, but what was done was done.  Here are some shots of the Joplin-based layout just before I began the re-build it as Springfield.  I hope you enjoy them as much as I did.......
After visiting some famous model railroads around the country I felt that a layout designed for one crew would seem lacking ans tried to find ways of engaging a second crew on my small layout, but Joplin was just not meant to be run that way.

Soon I began to consider other places along the MoPac's White River Sub, and found my attention wondering towards Springfield, Missouri more and more.  A few months went by with little progress on the layout, until my friend Blair happened to drive through Springfield on his way home from a vacation in Chicago.  Knowing that I was very interested in modeling Springfield, he stopped and took some photos for me.

Coincidentally, a few weeks later both TRAINS and MODEL RAILROADER had simultanious articles on modelign Springfield, so I thought I was set!  I even had the opportuntiy to meet the author of both of those articles ~ Pat Hiatt ~ and started learning even more about Springfield.
You might think that this was a dream come true, but in the end it was this wealth of information that lead to the ultimate dissatisfaction as once again I started to learn that the OPS in Springfield were nothing like what I had imagined for my small layout.  Springfield was a Frisco town all the way, and the MoPace had one small switch crew and only a hand full of industries there.  This would not do for what I had in mind.

Recently I have become more interested in the Florida East Coast Railroad, to see what I plan to do click on the link...
New FEC page is HERE
Before I took the Springfield/Joplin layout down (due more to the fact that I moved than with the layout itself) I was able to get one "formal" Operating Session in.  I invited over 3 of my closest RR buddies and wrote out the switch-lists for a two crew Springfield OPS plan, and away we went.
