| Michael Donaghue Son of John Donaghue Was born ...........1856 in Rotherhithe, Surrey.(Which is on the Sorthern side of the Thames, opposite West Ham. Zoom in and out with the maps to get a greater appreciation of where you are) His mother Margaret was 40yrs old when she had him. He married Alice Victory on the 25th April 1877 at the Roman Catholics Chapel, Barking Road, West Ham. (This Chapel no longer existed after the War) Michael was 22yrs of age, a Labourer and living at 1 Tucker Street, Canning Town.(This street has also disappeared). His father being John Donohue, also a Labourer. (Click here to read the 'West Ham Church Life Survey', it covers the developement and Industrial growth of West Ham over the Centurys and explains why you only needed to be a Labourer, scroll down past the 'Sorry>>>'till you see the bulk of the text) Alice Victory was born on the 23rd March 1857 at 13 Webb Street, Plaistow, West Ham. (This street has also disappeared) Her parents were William Victory and Margaret Victory nee O'Buant. William Victory is listed as a Labourer for Cran Boat Builders, both her parents, William and Margaret Victory signed the birth certificate on the 28th April 1857 with an X for their mark, neither could write. Alice was 20yrs of age and living with her parents William and Margaret and brother John at 33 Jane Street, Plaistow, West Ham, (This street has also disappeared) when she married Michael Donohue, Her father being William Victory a Labourer. Their Witnesses, were James Victory and Frances Victory. (They both may have been Alice's older brother's) Alice and Frances both signed their names by way of an X, which means neither could write. Michael Donohue and James Victory both signed their own names. (When Michael married in 1877 his Marriage Cert gives his place of residence as 1 Tucker Street, Canning Town. Which is West of Rotherhithe on the Northern side of the Thames. It's possible he was living there with his father John and mother Margaret. We can't find Tucker Street, so it may no longer exist. Canning Town could be said to be either under the general unbrella of West Ham, or on it's Western border.) Michael and Alice had a least two son's that we are aware of, John Donahue b. 1878 and Michael Donahue b. 1880 At the time of the 1881 Census, Margaret Donahue was visiting her son Michael and her daughter in law Alice Donahue nee Victory at 3 New Road, West Ham, Essex. Margaret Donahue is noted as being 65yrs of age, born in Ireland, a Visitor, Michael Donahue was 25yrs, born Rotherhithe, Surrey, a Labourer, Alice Donahue was 24yrs, born West Ham, Essex, their son's John Donahue aged 3 yrs, born West Ham, Essex, a Scholar, and Michaeal Donahue aged 1yr, born West Ham, Essex. (We can't find 3 New Road in West Ham, it's possible that it too no longer exists, this will need looking into, West Ham, being on the Northern side of the Thames from Rotherhithe. So Michael didn't move all that far from where he was born.) We also located Alice's parent's William and Margaret Victory and their son John Victory, at their home in 33 Jane Street, West Ham on the night of the 1881 Census. William Victory was aged 57yrs, born West Ham, Essex, a General Labourer, Margaret Victory was aged 54yrs, born in Ireland and their son John Victory was aged 22yrs, born West Ham, and unmarried, a General Labourer. The same night there was also John and Catherine Victory at 35 Jane Street, West Ham. John Victory was aged 68yrs, born in Plaistow, Essex, a General Labourer, and Catherine Victory was aged 73yrs, born in Ireland, which suggests John and William Victory may have been brothers, and lived next door to each other. |
