Course:  Math Topics

Instructor:  Mr. Kasner

Periods:  1st and 3rd Periods.                                      Room #:  562                                     Semester:  1st

Course Description:  This course is designed to expand students’ mathematical capacities particularly in the areas of mathematical modeling, communication, reasoning, connections and use of technology.  It further develops many of the topics and concepts discussed in both Advanced Algebra and PreCalculus.  Therefore, I recommend a grade of a “3” or higher in PreCalculus to ensure a proper mathematical background.  In addition, the material covered will prepare you for the following key areas:

1.      This course

2.      Other math courses (in high school or college)

3.      Many skills to apply in other non-math courses (in high school or college)

4.      Life

Classroom Policy:  The policies regarding classroom policy as outlined in the Student Handbook will be strictly adhered to.  The following policy on tardies and absences need to be touched on below:

Tardies            :            3rd Tardy à  ½ hour detention assigned by the teacher

6th Tardy à  referral to the office and a 1 hour detention

9th Tardy à  referral to the office and a Saturday-School

Absences:  12th absence (of any kind) à  a “5” in the course

For each day the student is absent (and excused), they have 1 day to make up the work.  For example, if a student is gone on Monday, they have until classtime on Wednesday to turn in any missing work.  This policy only holds if the student is gone for the whole day.  Any absences that exist for a partial day including athletic or school-related events are required to have the work done the next day.  In other words, you better check with me or another student to get the assignment.

***  All other policies regarding classroom discipline will be adhered to as

outlined in the Student Handbook. ***

Grading:  Grades will be determined based on a point system.  The total number of points obtained divided by the total number of points possible will determine the students grade.  The district’s grading scale will then be used to assign a letter grade:

            93% -- 100%   “1”

            85% --  93%    “2”

            77% --  85%    “3”

            68% --  77%    “4”

            Below   68%    “5”

Points will be obtained from the following:

Homework:      *  Daily homework assignments ranging from 5 to 15 points.

*  Homework may be based on completion or collected and assigned

                                        an accuracy grade.

*  This category will result in approximately 15-20% of the final grade.

*  Not all homework will be graded, but this is by far the most important

category.  This is where you begin to understand the material.

“Pop” Quizzes:  *  These are used to check and see who is putting time and effort into the

daily work and will be worth approximately 10-20 points each.

                                       *  This category will account for roughly 15-20% of the final grade.

Announced Quizzes:   *  These will occur approximately every two weeks (approx. 50 pts.)

*  Quizzes occur as a way to assess student progress before the

    chapter test.

                                                *  This will account for approximately 30-35% of your final grade.

                                                *  All quizzes will be returned to the student.

Tests:               *  These will occur approximately every 4 weeks (approx. 100 pts. Each)

                                    *  Tests will account for a major portion of your final grade (40-45%)

                                    *  Test will be returned to you to go over, but not allowed to be kept by the student.
