The Selkie
Firstly let me give thanks to my brother of the craft earthwizard for telling me a little more about these creatures of enchantment . Blessings brother .
Selkie means ' seal ' and is a seal fairy or madien . They are shape shifters , transforming from the form of a seal to the form of a human acording to legend . The power of their transformation lies in their seal skin and to return to their true form they have to have their skin . Take it from them and they are trapped in human form .
The Mermaid
"O do not listen to the Old Wives tales ,
that tempte us down to the sea's bleak shores.
I am old, and she is forever young, her hair blown red, then black,
her sea-gray eyes forlorn, my lovely faerie of the sea. "
Down by the wintering shores I go,
where my true love lives below the dark green cove.
"When i was young, my bonny lads,
I sailed the seven seas beyond the Western Lands:
and on my maiden vouage I did esys,
sea-maidens three, by the shores of Knocknarea."
Down by the wintering shores I go,
where my true love lives below the dark green cove.
"Madiens three naked were, on beach and sand, when they saw me,
each fled toward the sea's abyss, gathering round their hidden skins;
all but one, for at my feet lay the fairest sea-madiens's covering the world did ever see;
her face alight, her mind bestraught: for in my hand her skin besought.
Down by the wintering shores I go,
where my true love lives below dark green cove.
"I ran beyond the gray sea shores and hid the skin beyond her gaze;
I soon returned to find her there, sadly gazing into the green sward sea:
Her heart bereft, she pleaded with me, "Return my cloak, and set me free."
My mind resolved I implored her troth my wife to be."
Down by the wintering shores I go ,
where my true love lives below dark green cove.
"She cherished me, and I did her: threw amny years of happiness,
our children grew healthily, flying through the wild cornfields;
till oneday they found the dark sealskin below the stacked corn shields:
to my merwife they brought the treasured skin, and she blessed them.:
Down by the wintering shores I go,
where my true love lives below dark green cove.
"Soon I returned and saw her eye gleam, as my dear merwife did flee,
I run and run to the green sward sea, but to my amaze
my sea-wife vanished below the dark green waves never my eye to see again;
So now I stand on these gray bleak shores, bereft of my dark heart's core."
Down by the wintering shores I go,
where my true love lives below dark green cove.
