A creature with the head and body of an eagle, the body of a lion, and on occasions the tail of a serpent or scorpion. It builds nests of gold and lays agate therein. Its talons are of such a size people can make drinking cups from them. A fierce and deadly creature it tears its pray apart. They posses the knowledge of hidden treasure. It is often considered that the female has wings and the male has spikes on his back instead of wings. This mighty creature is a symbol of protection and represents strength and vigilance. In Assyria the Griffin and The Dragon are symbols of wisdom.
The Griffin is often seen on coats of arms. It is often found in Babylonians, Assyrians and Persians art and sculpture. They were used by the Romans for decoration, and are frequently used as gargoyles on churches of the medieval period. This mighty creature is also used as the badge for the Vauxhall car company. The chariot of Nemesis the Goddess of justice and revenge was pulled by Griffins in Roman art.
According to Greek mythology the Griffin took gold from Arimaspias (a stream) , and they belong to the God Zeus. The Griffin flourished among the Arimaspians a one eyed race of people. Although the origins of this creature is not known it is thought to be the middle east. Its native home is considered to be India.
