Flooring Judie's Office

Judie uses a small room just off the living room as her office. When we refloored the living room it seemed best to redo her office as well since the two rooms are visually connected. Unfortunately, after we emptied the room and pulled up the carpet we discovered the floor was not flat. If the floor isn't flat, the boards can't be laid properly. So we went looking for someone to smooth or float the floor.

It took two tries from professional tile layers to get the floor even close to flat. It still isn't great but it will do we hope! While we were getting the floor floated, we pulled the wall paper off the north and east walls of the room. In the northeast corner we discovered the drywall was wet. Apparently this wall had been wet since a year ago when we had a new roof put on the house. At any rate, we needed to fix it.

We pulled the drywall off and discovered that termites had entered the wall and had eaten one of the 2x4 studs in the wall. So we called the termite people! They came out and got rid of the bugs immediately. It was raining a lot during this time but the wall dried out and stayed dry so we are comfortable that the leak actually was fixed a year ago. It seems incredible but there just isn't any other answer. Here is a picture of the wall after it was repaired.

We are just happy that we didn't have to take out the door and re-stucco the outside wall!

Through various other distractions we were unable to return to our flooring job for two months. Now, finally, in November, we are back to flooring!

Originally I was hoping to be done with this job by Judie's birthday in August; now I hoping for Christmas! What a deal!

Update: December 2002!

Judie's office is back in workable condition. We still need to build some shelves but the floor is completed and the desk is rebuilt.

And here is the view she has from her sliding door.

Even in December it looks ok. That pool is darned cold though!
