My Poetry
The Otter
I strolled the path by the river
admiring life as I walked
When suddenly I spied an otter
so I stopped for a while and we talked.

I think I started the dialogue
I'm  new to this neck of the woods,
but you look a nice kind of fellow
so I'll share with you some of my goods.

I tore in half a cheese sandwich
and gave a piece to my friend,
He ate it in such a hurry
then scampered off way round the bend.

A few seconds later he returned
with some small fishes and passed me a few,
So we sat there and chatted of nothing
and no particular point of view.

The sunlight shone on his back
reflecting water drops on his fur,
And he told me of exciting adventures
and always addressed me as Sir.

His youngsters appeared by the bushes
saw us then just kept on playing.
So I beckoned that they come and join us
but they had no interest in what we were saying.

I had almost finished my sandwich
and he'd scoffed the other half.
I said what's it like living by the river
he said come on jump in for a laugh.

I was tempted to take up his offer
but declined in the politest of ways,
And asked if this part of the river
was the part where he always had stayed.

He said he came here last winter
after his last home was built on by man,
I apologised for my species
And said I'd like to help if I can.

Then droplets fell on my shoulder
I said I'd have to get out of the rain,
but it's been really nice to have met you
And I hope that I see you again.
