U-16 Plate Final

Our Under -16 team lost to Clogher Valley 16's in a highly contested friendly match to open their new clubhouse.

Missing, effectively, the core of the team, e.g. Captain Cillian Byrne, Ciaran Tully, Niles Nicholls, Bruce Vial, Donnagh McIntyre, Oisin O'Donnell and Saoirse Mc Carthy, 9 of the 15 who started the Plate final were absent. Despite this, Donegal gave a very good account of themselves.

Donegal put pressure on but were behind 7 - 0 when missed tackles in the forwards left the backs who were recovering from the previous phase, exposed and Clogher touched down in the corner and scored the conversion. Donegal got back into the match when Gary Cunningham drove over after good play in the forward, despite his shorts being a few feet south of the norm.

Clogher again broke from a ruck but missed tackles in the backs allowed them in under the posts and an easy conversion to leave the score 14 - 5 at half time.

Donegal came out in the second half with a few players re-arranged, but Captain Declan Gallagher who hadn't been moved, led by example and touched down but Philip Byrne couldn't slot the conversion.

Clogher spotted Donegal's eagerness to attack and with no-one at home, kicked deep into the Demon's 22 and despite despairing tackles, touched down. The conversion was missed but after that, despite a lot of effort, Donegal never looked like scoring and it ended 19 - 10 to Clogher Valley.

At the same venue, Pete-so Cannon, Anthony Byrne and 2 Letterkenny players represented their county by playing for Ulster Youths against Clogher Valley's Under 18's. A friendly between Clogher Valley Seniors and the Ulster 1999 European Cup winning team also took place with stars like Andy Ward, Roger Wilson, Justin Fitzpatrick and Ian Humphreys taking to the field.
