A quite large crowd gathered on Wednesday
to watch Braydon RFC (from Newcastle, UK), who are Champions
of their region, take on a Demons 17's select. The touring
team brought quite a lot of support, who made themselves very
well heard, along with a panel possibly in excess of 30.
The Demons didn't look out of place and
showed up at ruck time well, but it was the visitors who drew
first blood with a try and magnificent conversion from their
scrum-half. Revenge was sought, and a great forward move ended
up with captain for the day Gerard McIntyre, playing at No.8,
coming away with the ball after touching down under the cover
of most his pack.
Donegal didn't have the services of some
of the County players, who had returned from Wales just over a
day before. Players like Conal O'Callaghan, Donal Byrne, Ivan
Corrigan and Eoghan Mc Neill possibly could have swung the
game in the Demons favor as Braydon ran over the try-line
after simple organization errors.
Late on, Captain and No.8 Gerard
returned from the sidelines to come into the center, while
prop forward Shaun McGill filled in at Full-back. The new
center delivered the pass that gave the Demons the final word.
He set up wing forward Jim Scully for a run in try, with three
men to spare, although it did turn out to be a consolation.
For Braydon RFC, their scrum-half took
man of the match on their side, while our Declan "Jig"
Gallagher scooped it for Donegal. Declan received an "Irish
Experience" jersey from Braydon's tour, which turned out to be
XL, and as a cheap shot, a tub of hair wax......
The fun lasted well after the final,
with the Newcastle lads bringing their way of life into the
clubhouse, giving us all a great laugh.
