WEEK NINE
Since 1949, Presbyterians have joined with millions of other Christians through One Great Hour of Sharing to share God's love with people experiencing need. Our gifts support ministries of disaster response, refugee assistance and resettlement, and community development that help people find safe refuge, start new lives, and work together to strengthen their families and communities. Recognizing that the hope we have in Christ is lived out in our hope for one another, we respond with gifts that help our sisters and brothers around the world find the hope for a brighter future.
The PC(USA) is one of nine denominations which participates in this ecumenical offering. PC(USA) OGHS offering totals over $10 million annually. After deducting the costs of creating and distributing promotional materials (roughly 5%), the remaining, undesignated gifts are divided among three programs as follows:
36% Presbyterian Disaster Asistance
Disaster response and ministries with refugees and ministries addressing homelessness and affordable housing.
32% Self-Development of People
Partnerships with groups of people who are oppressed by poverty or social systems, who want to take charge of their own lives, have organized to do something about their own condition, and have decided what they need to do to produce long-term benefits for themselves.
32% Presbyterian Hunger Program
Ministries working to alleviate hunger and eliminate its causes, responding with compassion and justice to poor and hungry people in local communities, in the nation, and throughout the world.
�OGHS Offering at Work: The Miracle Tree
Jack's beanstalk may have sprung from magic beans, but that shrub has nothing on Moringaoleifera, Senegal's - miracle tree.- In this drought-plagued West African country, plants gasp and crops often fail. Malnutrition is common, especially among women and children.
With an affinity for arid climes, the Moringa tree flourishes in places like Senegal, where your gifts to One Great Hour of Sharing are helping to spread the news, encouraging individual families to grow and harvest nutritious leaves and pods from their very own Moringa trees. With your support, Church World Service and local partners in northern Senegal are growing hundreds of acres of Moringa trees, and harvesting and processing the leaves into leaf powder to help meet the immediate nutritional needs of mothers and children - often until the family can begin harvesting from its own trees. Leaf powder from the farm is also being tested as a nutritional therapy to stabilize the health of people who are HIV positive.
