All You Want to Know about Me

Higher Education:

I graduated from Slippery Rock University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. While an undergraduate student there I also majored in Philosophy and earned minor in Chemistry.

I am currently a second-year graduate student at Villanova University's Biology Department. I am also working as a Teaching Assistant as part of my graduate school experience towards earning my Master of Science Degree in Biology, and therefore I am currently assisting Dr. Mary Kay Francis with How Microbes Rule the World (an introductory microbiology class for non-majors) and Dr. Louise Russo with two lab sections of Cell Biology (an upper-level biology class for juniors and seniors). The upside of this teaching assistantship is that I will be able to use the experience acquired there if I must teach labs again (or teach a lecture---yikes!!!) whenever I go for my PhD (I have chosen to drop the goal of going for an MD/PhD and instead have chosen to focus on seeking a PhD in either Cell & Molecular Biology or in Pharmacology).

Future plans:

Now that I'm into my second year of graduate school and have begun working on my research it has become evident that I will not be able to finish my thesis work and have it defended by May of 2007, so in all likelihood I will graduate either in December of 2007 (or in May of 2008 if I decide to run more control experiements in order to submit my thesis for publication in a peer-reviewed journal). I am not certain as to what exactly I will get into when I graduate from Villanova, but one area that has been suggested to me by the Villanova Biology Department chairman is pharmacology.

Whether I end up doing research in the field of Cell & Molecular Biology or in Pharmacology, I hope my research will significantly contribute in the ongoing endeavors to find the cure for cancer or HIV so that I can help alleviate human suffering on this planet. But even if I don't make any discovery warranting my receiving a Nobel Prize I still hope to make some contribution to biomedical science and I expect to earn a decent living doing so.
