Immigration
As I mentioned, I married my wife in Taiwan. I needed a viable job to prove that I could support her before immigration would allow her to come here. Bad news as I had just been laid off from a government contract job. That's why I decided to go to work for a public utility, the phone company.
Once here, she promptly started taking classes in US history and government. She was required to take the citizenship test in ENGLISH. She understands that we are a constitutional republic and not a democracy. She understands why we have an electoral college. If you want to raise the hackles on my wife's back, just bring up bi-lingual ballots or bi-lingual driver license tests. She believes that you should speak english if you want to live here, be a citizen and especially if you want to vote.
It did take her a while to get used to our freedoms here. Get used to the fact that a police officer was someone you could trust to go to for help. She had trouble at first understanding why Bob Hope on TV didn't get into trouble for making fun of the government and the President. In the country that she came from, those were things that you didn't do.
