There are 3000 people in the United States alone who need a bone marrow donor right now who matches their tissue type. You may have the bone marrow tissue type necessary to save one of their lives. So please register in the National Marrow Donor Program database and make yourself available as a potential bone marrow donor!
  • You don't need to give marrow to register -- just a blood sample. The National Marrow Donor Program will determine your bone marrow type from the blood sample and enter it into the national database. If you ever match a person who needs a bone marrow donation, the National Marrow Donor Program will contact you anonymously.
  • It costs you nothing to register. A federal government program will pay for the cost of registering Asian, African, Latino/Latina, and Native Americans because of the critical shortage of registered donors in these ethnic groups. Members of any other ethnic group can register at no charge by donating a unit of blood at the same time that they donate the small blood sample for registration.
  • If you "match," it costs you nothing to donate. All costs of the procedure are paid for by the recipient and/or their health insurance proram.
  • Donating is safe. The procedure has been done nearly 20,000 times now and been proven safe and effective for both the donor and the recipient.

Common Questions About Bone Marrow Donation

  • "Who's eligible to register?" A person must meet the following requirements to register: (see complete list)
    • age 18-60 in good general health
    • within the last year, has not traveled to a malarial area or gotten a new tattoo or new piercing
    • no history of insulin-dependent diabetes (diet-managed is OK), heart disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure (medication-controlled is OK), HIV or HIV risk factors, serious allergic asthma (exercise induced is OK),  cancer (local skin or cervical cancer is OK), hepatitis B/C, weight over 290 pounds or Body Mass Index over 40, malaria in last three years, epilepsy in last year, or serious back problems
    • willing to donate to any person who is in need
  • "Who can bone marrow donation help?" It can save the life of people with diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma, aplastic anemia, and many other conditions.
  • "What happens if I 'match'?" After receiving education and giving your informed consent, you would undergo one of two procedures: Peripheral Blood Stem Cell (PBSC) donation, or Marrow Donation, depending on the need of the recipient.
    • In more than half of cases, PBSC donation is now sufficient. In this procedure, the donor takes injections of a medication called filgrastim to increase the number of adult blood stem cells in his or her bloodstream. These adult blood stem cells are then filtered out of their blood by a machine a procedure that is similar to blood donation.
    • In the remaining cases, Marrow Donation is performed. The donor undergoes regional or general anesthesia, and a thin needle is used to remove marrow from the donor's pelvis.

Free Business Card-Sized Marrow Donor Recruitment Cards

To make it easy to remind people to register, I have created a free card the size of a business card (so it easily fits in a pocket, wallet, or purse) that includes all the information a person needs to get registered. These cards are free and in the public domain. Feel free to download, print, edit, distribute, and reuse the cards however you wish.

It's easy to pitch someone in a few seconds: "Say, are you registered to be a bone marrow donor? (hand them the card) Registering is free and could save a person's life. Registering only requires a sample of your blood, no marrow. (if they are an ethnic minority:) It's especially important to get more people of color to register because you're most likely to find a match within your own ethnic group and there's a shortage of registered donors. When you're done, pass on this card to a friend. And would you like any more cards to give to other friends?" That's it! If they ask a question you don't know the answer to, you can just tell them to call the phone number on the card.

How can you distribute the cards?
Here are templates you can download and print yourself. You can just doubleclick the links and the files will open in Microsoft Word (or a compatible word processor) on your machine. Or, to download and save a template to your disk: (1) put your mouse over the template's link on this page, (2) press the mouse's right button to display the context menu, (3) choose "Save Target As ..." from IE's menu or "Save Link Target As ..." from Mozilla's menu, (4) save the file to your desktop, (5) double click the file to open it and edit or print it. Right now, the templates are in Microsoft Word format; over time I will post templates in other formats as well.

The Urgent Need for Ethnic Minority Donors

It is especially important to recruit more members of ethnic minority groups to register. You are most likely to find a compatible donor within your own ethnic group. Unfortunately, most of the people registered in the national registry are Caucasian. As a result, Caucasians have about an 85% chance of finding a matched donor, but members of ethnic minority groups have only a 40-60% chance to find a matched donor. The only way to solve this problem is to get more people of color to register.
