Comments on the Ledwith Page from Mary McDonald Eagleson
I'm delighted to find someone else researching Ledwiths. I had become
>discouraged with that line after reaching an impasse a few years ago.
>My paternal great-grandparents were Michael and Mary Harney Ledwith;
>they came to Boston in 1874 from Athlone (originally County Longford)
>when their first child, Mary Elizabeth Ledwith, was an infant. During
>the 1970s I did considerable research both in Boston and in Athlone.
>We found Ledwiths in Athlone, Moate, Longford, Oldtowne, as well as in
>London. We stopped at a Ledwith Filling (gas) Station in Longford and
>at a Ledwith Gift Shop. Colm Ledwith, the proprietor of the filling
>station put me in touch with his father, who referred me to Frank
>Ledwith of London. Frank was an author, fascinating correspondent and
>very intelligent man who has probably died by now. He said we are
>definitely related to the poet who was killed during WWI. I purchased
>a book of his poems. We visited the Ledwithstown Mansion in 1977 when
>it was literally falling down; a refugee was hiding out in the
>basement and ran from our cameras. When my husband and I visited in
>1986 the "mansion" had been purchased by a private party and was being
>restored. We have stayed in touch with the Moate Ledwiths who are
>wonderful people.
>
>During the 1980s I put my research aside and worked full time to help
>my husband get our three children through college. Now we're retired
>in Florida for a year or so, and I'm active in the Citrus County
>Genealogical Society and use the nearby Mormon Family History Center.
>I have copies of several Ledwith birth, marriage and death
>certificates from the mid-1800s.
>
>Recently, we visited the Immigration Museum on Ellis Island and saw
>the following names on the Immigrant Wall of Honor: "Mary Elizabeth
>Ledwith," whose name my brother, Dr. John Ledwith McDonald of Santa
>Rosa, CA had inscribed. In addition were: "The Michael Ledwith
>Family of County Longford," Ireland, "Lawrence Ledwith," and "Helga
>Kraemer Ledwith." By using the computerized directory at the Museum,
>one can see the name and city of the sponsor. I'm currently trying to
>reach the woman in Bohemia, NY who sponsored the Michael Ledwith
>Family of Longford.
>
>I'd be happy to share any information which would be helpful to you.
>I know that some Ledwiths immigrated to Australia and became
>successful wool merchants. Others, including my own family, did well
>in Boston and beyond.
