For those of you who don't know, as a hobby, I am a member of the SCA, an international organization dedicated to researching and re-creating the arts and skills of pre-17th-century Europe. Our "Known World" consists of 19 kingdoms, with over 30,000 members residing in countries around the world. Members, dressed in clothing of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, attend events which may feature tournaments, arts exhibits, classes, workshops, dancing, feasts, and more. Our "royalty" hold courts at which they recognize and honor members for their contributions to the group.
As a member of this organization, I enjoy voice heraldry, the fine art of brewing wines and meads in period, fencing and basic early period costume construction. I am an avid student of pre 1700's history, and the martial arts.
My registered persona name is Aibinn ingen Artain. It sounds like Avon with a long E instead of the A sound, knee, R-Tain. Its meaning is "Statuesque daughter of Artan" Artan at the time was the king of Miridies, our neighboring kingdom to the north. The name is 1550 Irish Gaelic. My persona is a brewer who endeared herself into the ranks of nobles with her talents of brewing. Knowing how to read and write in the kings language, and being fair to look upon granted her the opportunities to herald for kings, dignitaries and events. Traveling in certain political circles and bearing fine meads enabled her to coerce certain fencing maestro's into teaching her to fine art of fencing.
I live in the shire of Southkeep which pretty much covers South Ft Lauderdale, down to Key Largo, in the Kingdom of Trimaris which is the regional chapter of the SCA, covering most of the state of Florida.
I am handfasted to Donatello deNapoli, who is an authorized Archery & Live Weapons Ranger and a lover of all things sharp and pointy to throw or shoot. Mundanely he is a USAF Reservest Sr Master Sgt, Supervisor of Combat Arms Instructors in Homestead, Florida
My extended SCA family covers a good many people, to name a few in the immediate family; my fencing instructor was Baron & Don James Standish III. I was a brewing apprentice to a member of the Order of the Laurel, Her Excellency, Mistress Catherine Abernathy. I am a Protege' of Pelican & Don Alfric Northwind who is the principal of the Order of the White Scarf Trimaris. I am also House Asgards Brewer.
As a member of the Order of the White Scarf Trimaris, I have two cadets. First, being Robin LeCleaver in Sangre del Sol, taken on 9/4/05. The Second, being Michael Kendrik in Starhaven, taken on 9/10/05. Both are heavy weapons marshalls and have been active in various aspects of the SCA for a while now. I encourage them in their training and offer various challenges to them that will help them in participating in the dream. I charge them with learning all they can learn and sharing their experiences and knowledge with others. And to maintain a balance with mundane life as well as the various interests they have in the SCA.
I have established a group association name in which those that are associated with me can be a part of. It encompasses my students, their companions, and anyone else who promotes the arts, be it science or martial or performs service to our kingdom. The group name is "Defencors Gratiarium" meaning Defenders of the Graces. The Graces refers to the three graces in greek mythology. Which were called upon to inspire artists, and philosophers.
Last TMT, May '07, I was elevated into the Order of the Laurel. It is the highest award in the arts and sciences that can be awarded in the SCA. With it comes a responsibility as a peer of our realm to encourage and inspire others through word and deed. I hope to live up to this responsibility. Meanwhile I look forward to continue brewing and teaching and learning more about early period pottery construction.
Also at TMT the King accepted our charter for the new Trimarian Brewers Guild. I hope that through the guild we can organize the brewers of the kingdom and get more people interested in period brewing.
