Aftere a while all anime looks the same, futuristic, robots, A.I, pubscent girls and a lot of mechanical tendrils and apocalyptic finales and unfortunately Metropolis although displaying state of the backdrops and clever use of CGI layering doesn't really do anything with the standard material it offers, it doesn't have the philosophy of
Ghost in the Shell, the bravery of Perfect Blue or the sheer visceral shock of Legend of the Overfiend, it's just the usual thing set in an amazingly detailed set of urban backdrops, which have to be fair been brilliantly realised. However on top of all these murky metallic vistas some of the character imaging was more reminiscent of Asterix than cutting edge anime.
It isn't boring, it isn't long and the pace is good, it 's all fine, just when you consider how much anime is produced in Japan you somehow wonder why this? I can't see what makes this as interesting as the films I mentioned above. I don't think anime is dead and buried, if anything it's influence is seeping into mainstream cinemas throughout south east asia (South Korea's
Nowhere to Hide for instance) and even in Hollywood (The Matrix). It just isn't cutting it in Metropolis
