actually the N64 wires are about an inch shorter than the GCN controller

Depends where you measure from. I would check but my brothers girlfriend has my n64 right now.

But seriously, they should have been longer. Or wavebirds should have been out at launch. Preferebly the latter, I would have picked up four of those had it happened. As it is I'll replace my cube controllers when/if they break with wavebirds. Until then, I'll have to keep pulling my Gamecube out of my entertainment stand and into the middle of the floor so my buddies have enough slack in the cable (while I use my wavebird, wheee). PS2 and Xbox meanwhile sit in the stand and still have plenty of slack. Oh well, do better next time Nintendo.

You know, now that I think of it, I do have twice as many controllers as I need. 
But if this really is a conspiracy, why didn't they release the Gamecube, THEN release the Gamecube with a handle? I would have had to go buy a whole new cube then!

Yeah VISS Nintendo made short wires to get you to buy a Wavebird.
And Microsoft made a huge ass gargantuan controller that no one in their right mind would ever want to play with in order to get everyone to buy the S.
And Sony only added 2 controller ports on their console in order to get everyone to buy the multitap.
It's one huge controller conspiracy, and EVERYONE is in on it, except YOU.

the only problem I have with the GCN cords is that it coils more than the N64 wire did, you have to straighten the wire more often
maybe theviss just didnt strech out the coiled gamecube cord
nvm, that just makes him look worse...
i remember day 1 with the cube in '01, i went crazy and just checked out the controller, and I did that length comparision with the N64
as you can see in the picture as well, the gamecube system is a bit behind the n64 and is higher, displaying its almost an inch longer than the n64

I don't have that problem but i don't wrap them around the controller either... not good for the cords.

Seriously, I bought four wavebirds the first month they were available.
Though I agree the wires were too short, there is no such thing as a good wire. My roommates' X-box and PS2 get knocked off the stand at least once a month from drunk people tripping on cords... Well the X-box cords just break free and have a whip effect and come flying at people sitting in front of the TV. That is my biggest issue with cords, people on lots of and different gots of drugs tripping on them and breaking stuff.

I agree that the cords are a bit short, but if it bothers you so much why don't you buy some extension cords and quit your bitchin. You can get them real cheap off ebay:
