FACTS ABOUT FAMILY VIOLENCE IN CANADA

* Abuse occurs in all forms of relationships such as parent-child, caregiver-client, adult child-parent, dating, gay and lesbian, marital and common-law and sibling.

* Since the age of 16, 51% of Canadian women report having experienced at least one incident of physical or sexual violence.

* Almost 29% women in Canada who have been married or in a common-law relationship have experienced physical or sexual abuse by their partner at some point during their relationship. 21% of these women were assaulted when they were pregnant.

* Children witnesses violence against their mothers in almost 40% of all violent marriages.

* Nearly 22% of women who have gone through wife assault have not told anyone about the abuse.

* Men who are violent are 3 times as likely to have witnessed spousal abuse during childhood. Women are 2 times as likely to be victims of spousal abuse who were raised in the same situation.

* Of sexual assaults by family members reported to police, 79% of the victims are girls and 21% of the victims were boys in the cases.

* A person with a disability has at least a 150% risk of sexual abuse of that for individual of the same age and sex without a disability.
