Corbelled Arches
The corbelled arch is a very unusual feature in masonry built structures. Its a way of building that allows each successive layer to support the one above so that the weight is evenly distributed. Heres a good example from the great pyramid at Giza.
Now its not surprising that a similar design appears in Mesopotamia where they used it to vault their tombs. Geographically Mesopotamia borders Egypt so its no similarity that they may share a few design tips
Heres a picture of the excavation at Ur. It shows the top of a family tomb that was traditionally built into the actual floor of the family home
Now heres the similar thing that doesnt make sense. This next picture shows the entrance to Pacals tomb in Palenque
You can see the start of the vaulted roof at the bottom of the steps. That is similar isnt it?
But the similarities at Pacals tomb dont end there
Heres a cross section of his tomb
And heres a cross section of the extremely similar great pyramid
