You have been home for all of three weeks
I have seen much love and felt your kiss upon my cheek
You have said the words, "Mom, I love you"
And made my day with the little things you do.

But then I met with your counsellor at school
She confirmed you were smart and nobody's fool
We all know you have the smarts to succeed
All you have to do is define want over need.

My son, my brilliant and admirable one
You are my life, you are my destiny son
I would give my life to see you reach the sky
I would give my life for your happiness and not question why.

I sat and held your hand as you began to cry
And inside all I wanted to do was die
I know! I can feel it, you are feeling lonely and blue
Sweetheart, please know, this is not something I wanted to do.

You have to know a mom's love is everlasting and real
No matter, at any given time, what you may feel
I will always be here and will never turn my back
We have history together, something we will never lack.

I know you will not understand any of this now
You will look at me from beneath a frustrated brow
But, in time, once you have grown you will see
That this is something, for your own good, that needed to be.
