I look at you dad, and see my mentor, my friend
***
Whenever I was in trouble, I could turn to you
Remembering times when I hid bruises, black and blue
Afraid to show you because you would hurt inside
The love for your children is an emotion you refuse to hide.
***
You have taught me to be the very best I can be
And never to show the weaker side of me
Picking up the pieces of my life and putting them in place
Never leaving a trail of loose ends, not even a trace.
***
When I see you play and talk with my children
You are the greatest granddad, that is a given
You are stern but kind and loving, that is true
Even when they make the mistakes that they do.
***
And the song, "Daddy's Girl", when you would sing
Brought me back to the days when you pushed me on the swing
And remembering the diary at Christmas, that came with a key
Brought me to now dad, the person I have grown to be.
***
You have always been my protector dad, and always there
And for that I am grateful, for your wisdom and being fair
Even though I don't always say it, "I LOVE YOU"
I love you for the person you are and the things that you do.
