There was no show and tell for this meeting.
Sylvia hosted a wonderful program on the History of Ballerina Barbies
complete with a 7 page hand-out she'd made with an itemized list and pictures.
She went to a lot of work with this program in both the detailed research
and her lovely presentation of Ballerina Barbies.
It began with a 1961 Ballerina Barbie outfit (pictured below), right up to the 2006 Twelve Dancing Princesses.

1961 - Mattel created an outfit
called Ballerina #989 (1961 booklet)Barbie's first tutu is from The
Nutcracker Ballet and she is the Sugar Plum Fairy in silver drop-waist
bodice, white net tutu gathered skirt, silver crown(HTF), white ballet
slippers, pink satin slipper bag exactly like each dancer carried in
the 1960's, and black leotard and tights, the required practise gear of
the time. A Show Program was the accessory. Value: NRFB $140.00
1962 - Skipper gets a matching
pink sparkly tutu called Ballet Class #1905 (1962 booklet)includes a
floral garland for her hair, pink satin ballet bag, white ballet
slippers, black practise tights and leotard. Value: NRFB $135.00
1970 - Mattel created another
outfit called Prima Ballerina #1787 (1970-71)Barbie's brightest tutu is
hot pink with orange & yellow tulle, hot pink pantyhose-style
tights and ballet slippers.
1973 - Another costume for
Barbie Barbie Get Up'N Go #7701 (1973-74)The box says 'Graceful For The
Ballerina' contained white tutu, black leotard & tights, slippers,
slipper bag and satin roses.
1971 - Skipper gets a new tutu
Ballerina #3471 (1971-72)turquoise satin bodice, turquoise and hot pink
nylon tulle, turquoise satin ballet bag, pink panty hose and slippers
1973 - A co-ordinate costume
for Skipper Get Up 'N Go #7714 (1973-74)The box says 'Pink & Pretty
Fashions For Ballet Class' and contains pink tights, leotard, pink
coverup, white tutu, slipper bag, and ballet slippers.
1975 - Ballerina Barbie
#9093 (1975-76)Mattel produced the first Ballerina Doll with a
center part & blonde ponytail tied low, embedded gold crown so the
child could make her spin, new ballerina arms, legs that could help her
do the splits or execute an arabesque, pink TNT body and head, gold
trimmed white tulle tutu, white ballet slippers with ankle straps,
three red plastic roses.
1975 - Ballerina Cara #9528
(1975-76)African American ballerina with Steffie head, center part and
low bound black ponytail, pink tutu styled the same as Ballerina Barbie
with the same accessories. Her body is also constructed like Ballerina
Barbie #9093.
1976 - Ballerina On Tour #9613
(1976) A department store special. There are at least three
variations of the costumes that Barbie took on tour and all these
costumes were also sold separately:
Snowflake Fairy #9327 long white(4 versions of this costume)
Princess Aurora #9329 Sleeping Beauty in red and gold
Sugar Plum Fairy #9326 pink satin and tulle tutu with wand
These costumes are accessorized with crowns and slippers, and some have
hair pieces and tights. Some versions includes hot pink tights, leotard
and pink practise tutu while other versions also include a peach
practise tutu and lavender practise tutu.
1976 - Sear's Fashion The
Nutcracker Suite #9650 (1976) two variations includes record, tutu,
leotard, tights, crown, ballet slipper bag Value: $55.00
1978 - Re-issue of Ballerina
Barbie #9093 (1978-79) this time with heavier make-up, blonde side curl
ponytail, red dots in the eyes as was the custom of Ballet Companies in
the 1970's. Barbie's tutu is slightly changed with fewer layers of
tulle.
1978 - Re-issue of Ballerina On
Tour (1978)contained three costumes
1983 - Ballerina Barbie
Mervyn's Dept. Store #4983 Super Star head, white tutu gathered at the
waist not at the hip. This is the last doll to use the ballerina
arm construction. Value: $45.00 Mervyn's 1984 Ballerinal

Christie. This doll is designed to sit atop a cake. She has
pink costume and slippers and is HTF in box as most dolls were removed
from the box for use.

1992 - My First Ken
#1503(1992-93)Caucasian/blonde and African American versions in pink
irridescent jacket with white lapels with turquoise trim and white
stretch pants and shoes. Box says 'Easy-to-dress ballet partner
of Barbie!' This Ken has the Secret Hearts head and the black version
is model #3876 and has the black Ken head

blonde in pink tutu. The black version is valued at $150.00
1993 - My First Barbie

1991 - Swan Lake Barbie #1648
blonde super star head with newly-sculpted arms standing in a
'etched-look' but plastic gazebo shaped case. The doll is
costumed as 'The Swan Queen', and the music box plays 'Swan Lake'.
Value: $185.00
1992 - Nutcracker Barbie #5472
blonde super star head with split fingers in 'etched look' plastic
case. This doll commemorates the centennial of the first
performance of 'The Nutcracker' in 1892. The doll is costumed as
'The Sugar Plum Fairy' and the music box plays 'The Dance Of The Sugar
Plum Fairy'.
CLASSIC BALLET SERIES - Mattel
created a series of dolls with beautifully sculpted ballet arms and 'en
pointe' classically trained turned out feet, legs with the ability to
extend high in the air and detailed very high quality, well researched
costumes as follows:
1997 - Sugar Plum Fairy #17056
with Super Star face and long blond hair, eye lashes, pointed feet en
pointe, pink tulle calf length costume with tiny golden bows down
bodice. Value: $24.00
1998 - Swan Queen #18570 in
both Caucasian Super Star face and African American 'Asha' face, real
eye lashes, en pointe feet. Her costume is a 3/4 tutu as the
traditional of the 'Swan Queen'. Value: $22.00
1999 - Marzipan #20851 Mackie
face with beautifully sculpted feet en pointe, misty green and pink
ankle length costume, platinum hair upswept with dangling ringlets and
creamy complexion, real eye lashes - an exceptionally beautiful doll.

2000 - Snowflake Fairy #25642
Mackie face, blonde, real eye lashes, ballet arms, en pointe, blue and
white tutu. Value: $27.00
2001 - Flower #28375
Mackie face, dark blonde, in rose coloured 3/4 length tulle layered
costume from 'Waltz Of The Flowers'. She is a beautiful doll with real
eye lashes, ballet arms, en pointe. Value: $25.00
2002 - Swan Odette #53876
an exquisite Mackie face with brunette ringlets,calf length white swan
costume in the tradition of a Cygnet, beautiful creamy skin tones, real
eye lashes - an outstanding dolls. Value: $24.00
2003 - Candy Cane #57578 new
smiling face in pale pink & mint green candy-striped fabric over
pink tulle, calf length skirt, holding candy-striped wand. This costume
is outstanding. Value: $22.00
Most of the above dolls were made into Christmas tree ornaments by
Hallmark. The ornaments were beautifully done in great detail
with artistic & correct ballet positions.

2002 - Play Series The
Nutcracker and Video includes Ken as the handsome Prince
Eric(once the Nutcracker), designed to introduce children to the music
of Tchaikovsky. Barbie(#50792) has a lovely pink calf length
ballet costume and Ken has a red, white and blue Nutcracker uniform.
2002 - Mattel created a
costume for Clara in 'The Nutcracker', a pink cotton dress and bloomers
2004 - Ballet Star Barbie
#H2378 Target Exclusive in red tutu and tights
2005 - Mattel came out with a
series of Ballet Stars with painted tights in three versions - pink
tutu, blue tutu, mauve tutu. They had three different faces,
ponytails and straight legs and were meant for younger children.

2004- Ballet Dream Barbie

2005 - Play Series Swan Lake
Barbie and Video - designed for children, this is anadaptation of 'Swan
Lake' with a happy ending. There are many added characters in the
form of Kelly dolls and magical creatures. Many accessories could be
bought.
2006 - Play Series The Twelve
Dancing Princesses and Video a series of twelve dancing dolls and a
video based on the story of The Twelve Dancing Princesses, designed to
introduce the child to the music of Mendelssohn. Ken is the shoemaker
who falls in love with Genevieve. The princesses range from Barbie
sized, to teen Skipper sized to Kelly sized and have jointed bodies so
that they can dance. The eldest, Genevieve, has a calf-length hot pink
ballet dress that lights up when whirled. Accessories could be
bought/carriages/castles/princesses bedrooms.
