| Hello! My name is Kelli Miura and I am the daughter of Mr. Max Miura, Dole Middle School Band director. I have been involved in music since the early age of five starting with piano and moving to clarinet. I also have an older sister, Janelle, who recently graduated from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in May 2003 majoring in Family Resources.. She also began her music career at five with piano and then switching to flute. Currently, I attend McKinley High School as a senior.. My dad was my first music teacher, but I now take private lessons from Mr. Stanley Shimada. People always wonder, "If your dad is a band teacher, how come he doesn't teach you himself." The answer to that is simple: Mr. Shimada was my dad's teacher to begin with. Yes, he was my dad's first band teacher at | ||||||||
| Kawananakoa Intermediate (Middle) School and he continued teaching my dad throughout high school. I look up to my dad, Mr. Shimada, and my sister very much and they have always been there to guide me throughout my life, whether it was music or personal. I owe them a lot, especially my dad, because he does a lot for me. I'm not sure if it takes a band director's daughter or his family members to see how much work they put into their job, but it's not that hard. Everyday I see examples of the sacrifices he and many other band directors out there make in order to dedicate their lives to making a difference in that of their students. He's always in school before 7:00 a.m. and he stays until the late afternoon. He goes to the band room frequently on weekends and everyday during the summer. My dad's band works just as hard as any other band out there and they have much to be proud of. They have traveled to Maui and California numerous times and participate in many parades. The Dole Band is one of the few middle school bands to participate in the Honolulu City Lights and it is a pretty long one. Because of their tremendous efforts, I wanted to do something so this band would get recognized and I figured that creating a web site would be a wonderful way. If you have any questions/comments/suggestions, please feel free to e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you for visiting this site and I hope you will return to view the changes. Bio: I enjoy playing the clarinet, listening to music (jazz, hip-hop, alternative, instrumental, pop, Hawaiian, etc.), traveling (Oregon, Washington D.C., California, Las Vegas, Kauai, Maui, Big Island), and spending time with my family and friends. My favorite thing to do is attend UH Warrior Football games. My family and I have been going since I was a baby and even before that. I'm always on the web sites trying to keep up, reading the newspaper, and watching the news for updates on the team's status. I go online everyday for at least an hour or two and my newest hobby is, of course, making this site better and better each time. In the past year, I have also started working as a file clerk for a doctor's office and an intern at Hawai'i Woman Magazine. Future: After I graduate from high school, I plan to attend the University of Oregon and completing my studies with a Master's degree in journalism. I would like to return to the islands afterwards and hopefully continue working for Hawai'i Woman. |
