Valourin's History
Mithrandrax was the lord of a demonic race, who were constantly in battle with their neighbors. The generals of his army though were greedy and power hungry, caring more for themselves than for the good of the army or land. This is the way it had always been, the way to power was to backstab and take advantage of those around you to gain more power for yourself and in time someone would do it to you as well. Mithrandrax knew, however, that if he could get generals that he could truly trust that he would have an advantage in the wars.

So to this end he thought to crossbreed his race with humans, he sent one of his trusted aides to the human lands where she was to seduce a likely human and return to give birth to the child. To accomplish this she took along some of the others and used them to set herself up as an apparent damsel in distress. A valiant knight happened upon her and seeing her apparent peril he dispatched of those she had brought with her, and despite the loss of allies she was pleased as he proved himself a warrior.

He was smitten with her beauty, and the idea of the valiant knight saving the damsel in distress and them living happily ever after so when things seemed to be moving that way rapidly he was happy to let it go that way. Soon they married and on their wedding night, in the wee hours of the morning the woman left, somehow knowing she had accomplished her goal. There was no note or anything of the sort.

She returned to her land and waited to give birth. When she did the so the child was brought up to believe that not only were their normal enemies evil but humans as well, and that his mother had been abused by his father and that is why he was not around. As soon as he was able he was trained in martial matters, strategy, combat, leadership and anything else that they deemed would make him a better leader.

While he was still an adolescent they began to put him in charge of small groups of troops. He would lead scouting parties and the like. As he grew older and more competent he was put in charge of ever larger forces. One day one of these forces came upon a similiar sized group of human invader. Combat began at once and both sides fought fiercely. In the end it was the two leaders fighting each other one on one. As they fought the human leader kept looking oddly at his opponent, there was something familiar about him. Finally the older humans experience won out and he disarmed the young halfbreed. Instead of striking him down however he attempted to speak to his enemy.

At first he was greeted with nothing but glares and utter silence. So instead of trying to get information from the young man he told a story, his story of saving a damsel and how she disappeared the night of their wedding. He told of his long search for any sign of her, fearing the worst, then of a sage that told him of a story of deceit that nearly broke his heart beyond repair. Only knowing that he had a son had made him able to carry on, he felt he must rescue him from his existence. Slowly the youth listened and understood. There was something about this man that made him trust him, and he had seen the valor and honor of his human opponents and it did not agree with all that he had been taught.

As he sat digesting what he was hearing his mother appeared beside him. She looked at the human and sneered, her husband sighed and tried to get her to tell him why she had done what she did and professed his love still. She would give nothing but contempt. Watching the interplay the young man began to see the truth, he stood up and tried to say he was going to leave with his father. As he uttered those words his mother snarled and leaped to attack, but not his father, he himself.

His father was faster though and intercepted her. They fought for a long time while the young man watched mutely and in shock. In the end both were mortally wounded, his father called him over with the last of his strength he told him to leave and not look back. Before the young man left though he also asked his name, the youth chuckled grimly, "My mother named me Valourin, it seems now that it was all a joke to her."

"You have already lived up to your name, and I am sure you will continue to do so son," his father said before he closed his eyes and was still.

Valourin listened to his father, gathered his sword and left the battlefield, moving in the direction of the human lands. In time he made it there, but as a halfbreed was not accepted well, always distrusted. That is until he found a place he fit in, with a sect of priests that worshipped a god of war called Talon. His skills, strength, and ability made him fit in well and no one cared about his background, only his devotion and ability.

Always Valourin thought of a time he would lead an army back to his old masters homeland and do battle to avenge his father. He listened for rumors of his enemy and went to sages to study more. One day he heard, from a well respected sage, that there was another plane, one of dreams and it was possible that Mithrandrax planned to use it as a base of power. After that Valourin's new goal was to seek this place and to see if it were indeed under the influence of his enemy. In time and study he found the way to enter it and found himself stumbling into the Threshold of Underlight the City of Dreams.
