I received the latest Peter's Row catalog today and was delighted to learn that there is a book about the Dunton family by Gail and Dr. Bill. I am going to order one. However, I have a feeling that my last Dunton ancestor - Adah - won't be there. She and her daughter seem to be missing from most accounts. Isabella Senior & Stephen Dunton (son of John & Elizabeth) had at least 6 children: sons: Senior, Stephen and Thomas daughters: Betty Savage, Adah Kemp (later Evans) and Ritter Taylor Adah Dunton married John Kemp on March 11, 1769. John died before 1777. They had a daughter named Sarah Kemp. Sarah Kemp married George Scott on Dec. 22, 1790. I believe George is the son of George Scott and the grandson of Baily Scott but that is not proven. George died before July 1, 1819. George and Sarah had a daughter named Nancy Scott. Nancy Scott married William W. Scott on July 1, 1819. William W. Scott was the son of William Scott Jr. & Elizabeth. Nancy died sometime before 1832 when William W. Scott married his second wife Henrietta Mason. He later married Elizabeth M. Scott. Nancy Scott & William W. Scott had a son named Azariah Francis Scott born Sept. 14, 1822. He was my great great grandfather. I have been fascinated by A.F. Scott. He was a Baptist minister and a well-known educator who served as the principal of several Academies. He is mentioned in several history books and his portrait is in the Gloucester Courthouse. He died in 1897 and is buried in Dunnsville VA in Essex County and yet I heard stories about him when I first visited the family home around 1960. One of the things that puzzles me is how he became so well educated while his own father signed his will with an X. I wondered if his mother died right after his birth and he was raised by someone else. The second son, William M. Scott, born in 1836 became a farmer like his father. Azariah Francis Scott married Margret Elizabeth Holt on May 31, 1852. She was the daughter of George Holt Jr. & Elizabeth Ann Savage (daughter of Michael R. Savage & Elizabeth "Betsy" Mapp). They had many children. My ancestor, Nettie Scott, married Richard Watson Eubank Now, I have 2 questions: Are Adah Dunton and Sarah Kemp in the Dunton book? Should I send pictures of the graves of Azariah Francis Scott and Margaret Holt Scott and their children to the Ghotes pages even though the graves are in Essex County? ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Feb 2001 16:35:58 -0800 From: "B. Hi Eleanor, I'll address your second question and comment on the first ... (2) Generally speaking, because Wayne has so much ahead of him with the Ghotes Virtual Cemetery, I'm asking that we delay adding graves from other places for a while. HOWEVER, if we have a descendant chart with Azariah Francis Scott in it, for example, then it is still appropriate and welcome for you to send the photo and say which chart it goes with. ALSO, at some future growth spurt of the Web site, I hope to add a section on "Where They Went." When we do that one, these photos will also have a place. (1) Have faith, or more faith, in the work of our esteemed ghotes. Isabella and Stephen and Adah and John and dau Sarah and all the cousins and etc. are indeed documented in the new Dunton book by Burton and Walczyk. I hope to post some new book announcements soon, since both Peter's Row and Hickory House Publishing have some great new books available. Meanwhile, here's the citation for this one: Burton, Wm.
