Biography
The band that was to become KFJ was formed in late 2000 by 3 school friends; Sam, Cranny and Adam on bass, drums and lead guitar respectively. They had a couple of practices but realized they needed a singer. So they asked a few people at school to do it but no-one seemed interested. It wasn't until February 2001 and the collapse of his old band that Ali offered his services on the mic.
So the band began practicing by playing Nirvana and Greenday covers in a small practice room at school when they could. To start with, nothing productive was really happening but as they moved to a new practice place, Low Ackworth Community Center, or "The Shed" as the band renamed it, things started to come together. After a couple of months the band decided that they needed a fuller sound and a rhythm guitarist needed to be found. It was then that Ali first picked up a guitar and began to join in with the bands songs.
Our first gig was scheduled for April 2001 at Pontefract's Town Hall with local lads Seed and The Anarchs. It was about this time that the band got the name Kung Foo Joo. However a bust up between two band members meant the gig never happened. After a few more months of hard practicing and fall outs the first gig was finally upon the band.
A few more bust ups between Ali and Adam meant that in November 2001 the band and Adam went their different ways. The band was back to a three piece and played one gig as a three piece so the band were on the lookout for a new guitarist. Steve McCaig, ex front man of The Anarchs offered his services so the band took him on.
A few practices with the new line up and a lot of songwriting saw the bands melodic punk sound become a more hardcore influenced, street punk sound with the odd hint of politicalness in their lyrics. The new line up began to play gigs in bigger venues than they had previously done so with some top bands and with enough money in the now in the kitty, they decided it was time to record.
January 2003 saw the completion of the EP which didn't really have a name with help from Phil @ House Of Mook in Leeds. The five track demo sold out within two months of us producing it and we are going into the studio again to record all our new material before we go off to uni in September.
