The Old Regime: Reign of King Louis XVI (1774-1792)

Marie Antoinette- In 1789 a mob descended on the palace at Versailles and demanded the royal family move to the Tuilerie palace inside Paris. The people whished her execution on the bases of not helping the people during their suffering.  On October 16 1793 Marie Antoinette was executed with out proof of her committing any crimes of which she was charged of.

Cardinal Fleury (1653-1743)- Andr�-Hercule de Fleury (1653 - 1743) was tutor to the young King Louis XV and in effect Prime Minister of France.  In 1726 Andre-Hercule de Fleury became a cardinal.

financial and administrative problems- The government was spending more money than it could earn.

Demands of the Nobility- The nobles demanded protection for their land during the revolution.

Identify "Jacques Turgot" (1727-1781)- One of the economic leaders of 18th century France.

Identify "Jacques Necker" (1732-1804)- 1750 entered the banking world in Paris. Director of the East Indian company.

Explain Louis Reign- Set up a efficient central administration.  Louis also kept a watchful eye on enemies near and far.

The Estates General (1788)

First Estate- hospitals, schools, and orphanages were run by priest and nuns. 

Second Estate- The second estate was full of the nobles of France.  They didn�t have to pat taxes and owned 20% of land.

Bourgeoisie- These people are the middle class of the French society.  These people wanted fairer tax distribution and a part of political power.

Proletariat- These are the powerful urban workers.  These people were a small group amongst the other French social classes.

Third Estate- The third estate was made up of the peasants, middle class and the urban workers.  They made up 98% of the population and paid higher taxes.  The peasants had no concern about politics but wished to have reliefs on their taxes.

Peasant life in France- Peasants in France were farmers.  They paid higher taxes then any other social group in France.

gabelle- This was a tax on spice which later turned into a tax on salt.  The gabelle was also away to make sure that everyone paid taxes.

corv'ee- unpaid labor.  The French government called upon these people during wars to help build roads on the battlefield. 

The Middle Class- This class grew very fast during the French revolution and flourished during this time. 

Urban workers- These workers worked for cheap wages and did work for nobles and other wealthy people.

King Louis XVI summons the Estates General (1788)

Identify "Elections for the Estates General"-  The election process for the first and second estates were direct elections of noble members and of clerical members.  The third estate was a indirect election.

Identify "Demands on the Monarchy"- The French people wished that Church leaders would rule the government.

Voting By Order- Voting by order is when each of the estates had 1 vote.

The Third Estate proclaims itself to be the National Assembly (1789)

Identify "The Tennis Court Oath"- vowing not to disband until they had drawn up a constitution for France.

Identify "Louis XVI Versus the National Assembly"-  Louis XVI had to accept the assembly.

A Paris Mob storms the Bastille (1789)


Describe what happened- They stormed the Bastille because they thought there were weapons and gunpowder in the Bastille.  But they were wrong and many were shot and killed but the mob ended up overcoming the guards and killing the general in charge. 

Jacques Necker's restoration- He was a financial master and was chosen to be an adviser.

Jean Bailly's promotion (1736-1793)- Chosen National Assembly president in 1789.  And was the mayor of France from 1789 to 1791.

Marquis de Lafayette's promotion (1757-1834)- He was a French solider then later on in his life he became a General in the American Revolutionary Army.

How did the revolt affect most aristocrats?- The revolt left the aristocrats fearful.
