Section 1&2 Review Questions

1. (A)  Clovis was the ruler of the Franks in 481.  He conquered Gaul which was a city of the former Roman Empire.  After Clovis converted to Christianity he soon gained support from the Gauls and the Roman Catholic Church.
(B)    The Islamic culture began their powerful campaign after the Franks and other Germanic countries carved their way up Western Europe.
(C)     Charlemagne at around 800 led Europe through a time of unity and was credited for making schooling a high priority.
(D) Alcuin was a respected scholar.  He was asked to teach at the school in Aachen that Charlemagne started. 
(E) The Treaty of Verdun that split Charlemagne�s empire into three different regions.  It was created by Charlemagne�s grandson to stop the fighting amongst Charlemagne�s heirs.
(F) The Vikings were the most destructive raiders during the medieval age.  The Vikings even ended the last parts of unity in Charlemagne�s empire.

2. (A) Europe had many resources they had coal mines, iron and other metal mines, fish, timber, and furs.

3. (A) The Franks led the first wave of invasion.
(B) The second wave of invasion in Europe was led by the Islamic.


4. Charlemagne tried to create a united Christian Europe so he could have control and unity in his empire.

2. Three features of a feudal society are that the Monarchs controlled everything, lords controlled the monarchs land, and the peasants worked the land.
3. Chivalries gave women more respect and were protected from danger.
4.  (A) The responsibilities of a peasant were simple they had to work the land and do anything the lord told them to do.
(B) The responsibilities that the lords had toward the peasants were simple to they had to provide food, housing, and protection from the onslaught of invasion.
