Happenings
Hi! I hope you have had a great weekend…We had a great week at school last week… Our book orders finally arrived last week…Wow! Scholastic has never taken this long before…I hope that this next order will be a little quicker. It seems that they have had quite a few items on back order, which might account for their delay…otherwise, I have no idea. I sent home new book orders on Friday. They will be due this Friday, November the 16th. Please be sure to make your checks out to the book company…Thanks! The students met a new letter person last week, Mr. Funny Feet! Boy did he have great big feet! Also, Mr. F was involved in a small fight with Mr. S and Miss A. It seems they had a hard time playing together…only Mr. F and Miss A wanted to play together…leaving Mr. S all alone. The students came up with some great ideas to help Mr. S feel better…and they all sent him some great letters to help cheer him up! This week we will meet a new letter person, Mr. N. Be sure to ask your child about the name of our new letter person! We also spent the week counting (playing marching games, clapping and slapping games, and stand up/sit down games…counting forwards and backwards). The students also began studying the numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4...They practiced printing the numbers (in the air, on each others’ backs, on their bellies, smile). This week we will add the number 5 and continue our counting games…As well as working on the concepts of more, less, and same. We will also have an assessment on these concepts. We had lots of fun reading this week…We read some fun stories about scarecrows…in The Little Old Lady Who was not Afraid of Anything and The Lonely Scarecrow. Included in our study of the letter F, we read a story about a fly…and the lady who ate him…in I Know an Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly. We read this story many times…in about five different versions. It was fun to see the different ways the little old ladies were drawn…as well as how these ladies found their dinners, smile. The students also colored their own versions to be put in their book boxes (if anyone still has any detergent boxes, we still need about 7 more…thanks!). Our Jack-O-Lantern that we carved for Halloween began to look a little droopy this week…so we read the story The Pumpkin Circle to see what we happening to him. We learned about the life cycle of a pumpkin…from seed to vine to flower to pumpkin and how it decomposes and then becomes the earth, and back to a pumpkin again in the spring! After a while, however, he became to squishy, so we had to find a different place for him to continue on in his life cycle… We also ended our farm unit. In cooperative groups (of the students’ choosing), they created murals of what they thought farmers’ fields looked like…and what might be found in those fields. The children’s interpretations were very creative, smile. On Monday we will have our Veteran’s Day program with the local veterans. After that, we will begin our new unit on Thanksgiving. The children will learn all about Pilgrims and Native Americans…which will culminate in our own Thanksgiving feast with our Reading Buddies on Wednesday of next week. Very exciting! I hope you have a great week!
