A German Shorthaired Pointer instinctively has the nose for the hunt. Let him use that nose and through patient guidance, he'll be the top hunting dog to point and retrieve in the field over any terrain!

Some points I have found about being in the field which may be of value to you as the hunter:

Dog won't wait until the shot!
A dog may be steady to the flush and honor the flush, but may not wait around for the shot! Have him try standing longer, at least to the shot,
but he isn't cooperating! He is driven to retrieve and as soon as the bird
is up, he wants to go. Try this:
What I have been doing is as follows:
When he goes on point I will walk up to him and clip a short (18") lead on
him. My training partner will go in and flush the bird, which most of the
time is shot. I will set the dog back in place with "whoa" and then release
him for the retrieve. If the bird is let to fly I will set him back and whoa
him before taking him in a different direction. All this is done with LOTS
of positive reinforcement.
