A Brave Little Pomeranian Puppy
UPDATES BELOW
Sunday November 28/1999 I stopped at my aunt's house. My cousin's girlfriend had found a little Pomeranian puppy in the middle of the road days before. She said he was just spinning in a circle in the middle of the road. She took him to a vet and he was put on Prednisone for possible head trauma. She couldn't keep him and was looking for a rescue that could take him.
I went home and couldn't get the little guy out of my mind. Tuesday I went back to my aunt's house and brought the little guy home. He is about 4 months old, weighs only 3.4 pounds and is just adorable. I took him straight to my vet from her house. It appears that he does have some head trauma. It appears that someone either dropped him on his head or let him fall down a flight of stairs which caused the head trauma. As a result of this trauma he can not walk straight. He just starts spinning in a circle like he is chasing his tail. What did the owners do about this? They dumped him in the middle of the road and drove away.
Can you image a 4 month old tiny puppy with head trauma, just left in the middle of no where? He must have been so scared. Plus he couldn't walk. He could only spin in a circle. Thank goodness my cousin's girlfriend found him on her way to work.
I'm treating him with Prednisone for possible head trauma, Albon for possible Coccidia (severe cases can cause spinning) and Cefadroxil for possible inner ear infection. He might also need 4 teeth pulled. He has a row of upper teeth behind a row in the front. Hopefully the one set of baby teeth will fall out on their own as he gets older. If they don't than the baby teeth will have to be pulled which can be very costly.
He can walk straight if a wall is on his left side. For exercise my daughter and I take turns running around the island in our kitchen with the pup chasing us. As long as the island is on his left side he can run after us quite fast. He is just a 4 month old pup so he needs exercise. When he is not getting exercise someone is holding him most of the time so he doesn't spin. He is on my lap right now while I type this web page.
He is so very sweet and loveable. He is just about housebroken and appears to be smart. I hope he fully recovers. My fear is that I will care for him, love him, tend to all his needs only to find out he won't get better and needs to be put down. I try not to think that far ahead. I just take one day at a time with him. It could take 4 or 5 months before we know if he will recover or not. No matter what, I will treasure those months I have with him.
I will update this story as time goes and as he improves. He will improve, I just know he will. We decided to name him Taz and Simba. I call him Taz because he likes to attack our pant legs as we walk by him. He doesn't bite hard. He just likes to grab at our legs. Also when I am on the floor stretching he likes to growl and act like he is going to attack me. He jumps at my legs, runs around my back and grabs at my feet growling all the while. He is so cute. My daughter calls him Simba from Lion King because of his strong will and bravery. He doesn't take anything from our Great Danes. He won't hesitate to chase them and grab at their feet. They just look at him and keep walking.
I am sorry the picture is so dark. This is Taz opening his Christmas present.UPDATE: 1/6/00 Taz spins less and can go from the kitchen to the family room without spinning. He can even jump up on the couch.
UPDATE: 1/16/00 Taz ran through out the house chasing and following me around. As I walked from one room to another he ran ride beside me without spinning. In the past he would just slowly walk behind me and spin in circles as he walked. He could run but only if he was chasing me out in the yard. Today was the first time he could run through out the house without spinning.
Taz is laying on the ground watching me take his pictureUPDATE: 4/5/00 Taz loves to be hugged and carried around in my arms. I think he will always spin when he gets excited. Tonight he got so excited to see my husband when he came home from work. Taz started spinning in a very fast circle. Right as my husband said, "I wonder how long he would spin before falling over," Taz fell over, looked up at my husband. You could tell by the look in Taz's eyes that the room was spinning. He then covered his eyes with his paws. It was so cute and sad. My husband picked him up and we all took turns holding the poor little guy. Of course Taz loved attention.
UPDATE: 7/11/01 Taz ended up staying here as a permanent house guest. With his spinning and not being able to go up and down stairs no one wanted to adopt him.
UPDATE: 8/1/01 Taz finally got a home. It was so hard for me to give him up and I never would have if I wasn't so busy saving so many dogs. Taz needed more attention then I could give him. Brian and Maria adopted Taz and I could not have found a better home for him. Taz loves his new family very much. I could see that in the photos they sent me.
