THUNDER HILL GREAT DANE RESCUE

Joey is so very sweet and kind. He loves my animals and every person he meets. He has the most loving and trusting eyes. He has no reason to love or trust people yet he does and with all of his heart. I will post after pictures when he is back to his normal weight.

Truthfully the best donation besides dog food would be two weeks of pooper scooper service. <big grin> Seriously. You can't image the piles I have to scoop with all the Dogs I have in rescue. Icky, stinky!! Somebody's got to do it. I just wish it wasn't me.
Joey will be heart worm tested, wormed, updated on shots and neutered. That will be about $150 right there. Now add months of dog food on top of that. Joey is heart worm negative. Thank goodness. He did have worms. They were so bad that they were starting to eat the lining of his stomach. Any longer and he would have been in real bad shape.
Saturday 1/20/01 I had to take a puppy rescue to the vets (he hurt his eye), 5 different stool samples ( stinky ), one heart worm test and worm medicine plus antibiotics. My total vet bill came to $160.
It breaks us rescuers hearts when we have to say no to an animal in need because we just don't have enough money. I do not get any discounts on vet bills, dog food, dog treats or other supplies. Far too often I hear people say, "Well you got the dog for free." Hmmm really? Many times I have to pay the adoption fee to get an animal out of a dog pound. I've had to pay the airfare to have a dog flown in to me because there was no other rescuer around. These dogs do not come already vet checked. I almost always have to get them heart worm tested, wormed, updated on shots, spayed or neutered... And what about the rescues that have skin problems, infections...? That cost more money at the vets.
I have had several heart worm positive rescues and rescues with other health problems. Yes I treat them which cost about $225 for heart worm treatments per dog and some times more for other health problems.
We won't even get into how much time us rescuers spend scooping poop, housetraining, obedience training, interviewing people to adopt over the phone, interviews with the people at our house to meet the dog... Ahh but we love it. <grin>
Am I whining? You bet. Just kidding. I'm trying to make a point. I have gotten several emails from people who have said nasty comments not only to me but to other rescues because we charge an adoption donation fee. How else are we going to get back some of our expenses? These people felt we should give the dog away for free or only charge $20 or $30. Obviously they don't live on this planet. <smile>
Here are updated photos of Joey. He is putting weight on nicely.

UPDATE: Joey is not doing so well. His platelet count has dropped. Joey might have cancer. An oncologist said it is either cancer or some disease that emulates cancer. The disease that emulates cancer is deadly but is easily treatable. He has had x-rays, blood work and bone marrow tests.
His latest blood work shows his platelets count has only risen just slightly. He is on medicine and has to stay on it another two weeks then more blood work. If his counts do not jump considerably he will have to go on Pretazone to see if that works.
UPDATE: 7/11/01 The medicine seems to be working and Joey is improving. I am hopeful for a full recovery but only time will tell. Joey has made a full recovery.
