About Great Danes
I feel that Great Danes are more Human like than any other breed. They want to be part of the family and share in everything. Great Danes are house dogs. Yes they are large, the largest breed dog but they need to be kept in the house and be part of the family. They do not do well in extreme heat or cold. They do not do well on a chain or left in a dog run. If you can not treat them like a member of your family than please do not get a Dane or any dog.
1. They need to be fed at shoulder level which means when they eat or drink their head should never drop lower than their shoulders. Use stainless steel bowls raised up on legs about 19 to 21 inches off the ground.
2. Feed at least 3 times a day when they are pups than at least 2 times a day for life. They do not get enough from just one feeding a day. Food should be dry. Give very little water until they are done eating. Make them rest for at least 45 minutes after eating then more water can be given. This helps prevent bloat.
3. They are large dogs and should be given a bed to lay on. They need sofa cushions, an old mattress, extra large dog bed or something with plenty of cushion. If they are forced to lay on hard floors they will develop ugly looking calluses on their elbows.
4. Go to the library and read all about Great Danes before you get one.
5. Contact a veterinarian in your area who knows the breed and ask health questions.
