Mas conocido por su papel del letal T-1000 en Terminator 2: Judgement Day,la carrera actoral de Patrick ha pasado por una impresionante variedad de roles.Luego de mudarse a Hollywood en 1984, participó en la obra Go y ahi fue descubierto por el director de casting de la productora de Roger Corman. Trabajo en dos películas de Corman, : Warlords From Hell y Equalizer 2000. Su variedad posterior de créditos incluye filmes como: All the Pretty Horses, Eye See You, A Texas Funeral, Spy Kids, Texas Rangers, Striptease, The Faculty, Copland y Fire in the Sky.
Nacido en Marietta, Georgia, Robert jugó en la American Legion Baseball en el secundarioy tambien football americano en Bowling Green State University en Ohio. Luego de asistir a algunas clases de arte dramático, decidió dejar el football por la actuación.. Robert co-protagonizó en Los Angeles la premiere de The Shawl de David Mamet, y tiene un papel recurrente en la serie de HBO The Sopranos. Su hermano Richard Patrick es el cantante de la banda Filter la cual tiene canciones en dos de los discos de bandas de sonido de la serie, Songs in the Key of X: Music From and Inspired by The X-Files y The X-Files: The Album - Fight the Future.
