Bouvier des Flanders

Origin: Franco-Belgian

The Bouvier is a big, intelligent dog measuring upwards of 24 inches at the shoulder. Known today as guard and police dogs, the breed formerly was used to herd cattle. Bouviers were army dogs during two World Wars, they carried messages under fire and searched for wounded. They are compact, powerfully built dogs with an alert, intelligent expression. Their shaggy, dense, harsh coat in shades ranging from fawn to black needs regular brushing.
