Potty Training your Dog
What do you need to
know to potty train your puppy right?
There are proper techniques to have your
puppy potty trained and then there are wrong techniques to use. Knowing
what is right and what is wrong is half the battle here.
Did you know that the old tried and true method of rubbing your
dog’s nose in their mess is the wrong way to go about
training your puppy? It only confuses them. What would be a better idea
would be to take your puppy outside and then give them lots of positive
reinforcement when they do their duty outside. Maybe have a treat handy
and give this to them.
Once your puppy has gone outside a few times, your little pooch will be
well on his way to being potty trained. You see, your dog will soon be
able to smell the designated area of where they are supposed to do
their business, even if you cannot.
A great trick to use while teaching your dog to potty train is while
they are outside doing their business, use a key word such as potty, or
something along these lines that you prefer. Say this keyword in an
upbeat way, getting your puppy to respond to the intention and the
word. Eventually you can start saying this keyword and you dog will
start sniffing around and looking for its area where it does this
function. This is great for situations such as when you want to go to
bed but you know your little puppy hasn’t gone potty in a
while.
Mistakes housebreaking your dog
Expect that your dog is going to make some mistakes in the beginning.
No one is perfect and this goes for your new little puppy too. You
should not scold him if he should have an accident on the floor,
instead take your puppy out to his designated area and get him to make
the association again. If the potty training area is where your puppy
goes again, then say your key words and give him a treat.
Food
In the potty training stages, you should not leave a water bowl and
food dish out for him to feed at all hours of the day. This will cause
problems if you are not around to monitor the situation. You have to
keep a close eye on your puppy during this potty training phase.
Schedule your pup’s times for eating. Make sure they are at
times when you can take your dog out afterwards. Don’t feed
him to close to bed time, otherwise an accident can occur during the
night.
You should only have food available to your dog for about thirty
minutes or so, and then remove it.
Housetraining your dog - Situations
Here is what you can do if your puppy has had an accident in part of
your house.
Do not scold your puppy, take him back outside and repeat the procedure
from earlier in the article.
Close off the area to the puppy for at least a month. This way the
smells in that area will be closed off to the dog and their will not be
any confusion as to where his potty training area is.
Be sure to clean the area where your dog had the accident. This will
help get rid of the smell and thus the idea that this is his potty area.
So when should you take your puppy outside to the potty training area?
-
After every meal
-
After waking in the morning and after every nap
-
Before going to bed
-
After playing
-
Any time that you think it has been awhile since your puppy has gone
outside, is a good idea to get him to his potty training area.
Potty Training Techniques
It is possible to train your puppy to let you know when he wants to go
outside to the potty area. Use some sort of noisemaker. In this
example, it will be a plastic bottle with the bottom cut off. Take
small bells that attach to string and pull the strings up through the
mouth of the bottle. Close the top and make sure the bells are hanging
about half way down into the bottle. You want to make sure that your
puppy can’t actually reach the bells and possibly swallow one.
Now that you have your bell, take it with you every time that you take
your pup out to the potty training area. As you go outside ring the
bell. Have your dog ring the bell to and when they make a noise reward
them with a treat.
It might take some time but with a little extra work this bell trick
actually works and the puppy will knock on the bell to let you know
that he wants out.
By being patient with your pup and being a little creative with your
training, you can have a dog that goes to the bathroom outside, all the
time, in a matter of weeks.
