Some Facts about the Chihuahua
According to the AKC, the Chihuahua is "a graceful, alert, swift-moving little dog with saucy expression, compact, and with terrier-like qualities of temperament".
An ancient dog breed, the Techichi, is believed to be the progenitor of the Chihuahua.
In the ruins of Chichen Itza on the Yucatan Peninsula dogs resembling the Chihuahua are depicted. The principle home of this little dog was pesent-day Mexico.
The breed derives its name from the Mexican State of Chihuahua. The earliest specimens of the breed were found there.
The small size of the modern Chihuahua is assumed to result from a cross of the a small hairless dog brought from Asia to Alaska over the land bridge that is now the Bering Strait with the Techichi.
By American Kennel Club standards, the Chihuahua breed was registered in 1904.
The coat can be long or short. A variety of colors are acceptable.
