History of Gucci
Gucci started up as a small, family-owned saddlery and leather goods store in Florence in 1921. Guccio Gucci, the founder, was the son of an Italian merchant from the northern part of the country. He travelled to Paris and London where he gained experience of cosmopolitan culture and aesthetics. Gucci hired the best craftsmen to work in his atelier and so quickly gained reputation as a manufacturer of high quality leather goods. In 1938 he expanded to Rome; After his death in 1953 his son Aldo expanded opening new boutiques in international cities like London, Paris and New York. In the 1960īs stores were opened in Tokyo and Hong Kong, and the famous GG-logo, formed by the initials of the company name was created.The late seventies brought up the Gucci Accessories Collection, or GAC, selling small accessories such as lighters and pens. The newly-founded wholesaling business brought the once-exclusive brand to over a thousand stores in the United States. During the 80īs the company lost al lot of itīs value and due to severe internal disputes the company was sold. Now the company is owned by Pinault-Printemps-Redout (PPR) S.A., Paris. After reorganisation a phase of growth followed, and in the late 90īs, when the new creative director Tom Ford received international acknowledgment for his work, finally the company gained reputation again as a trendy luxury label. Now dog tags are only one of various accessories branded by Gucci.
