One night, an assassin comes for the head of Lord British, the legendary ruler of Britannia. Being caught by Lord Blackthorn, a trusted friend of Lord British, the assassin tells Blackthorn he is a prophet and that Lord British is going to bring Britannia into darkness. Blackthorn continues to question the assassin and soon finds out that this man seems to be a man of virtue. Using a spell of insight on the assassin, Blackthorn realizes the destruction and horror that the future holds. Lord British is being tricked by his court magician, Nystul. Under his spell, Lord British believes the both of them can restore the Gem of Immortality with the Codex of Ultimate Wisdom, thus bringing back the whole of Sosaria. Lord British believes this will bring forth a paradise, while Lord Blackthorn believes this will bring certain doom.
While Nystul was still away, Blackthorn, with the telepathic help of the assassin, Exedur, and Nystul's granddaughter, Gavrielle, sneaks down to Nystul's chambers where the Codex of Ultimate Wisdom resides. There he meets Nystul's guardian, a towering daemon. After killing the daemon and taking it's form, Blackthorn goes into Nystul's chambers and begins reading the Codex of Ultimate Wisdom searching for a spell to stop the horrific future. Through the Codex of Ultimate Wisdom, Blackthorn sees the future with a corrupted self leading half mechanical men. Coming back to reality, Blackthorn is convinced of Exedur's truth. Just then he is interrupted by Nystul himself! They battle each other showing power and strength. Before one is able to kill the other, Lord British appears before them. He stops the fighting and they talk and argue. Lord British and Nystul continue to disagree with Blackthorn. Blackthorn says he will do everything in his power to stop them.
Some nights later, Blackthorn again wages battle with Nystul. After a quick succession of spells, Blackthorn cunningly teleports Nystul away from the magical protection of Castle Britannia to Blackthorn's Castle. There Blackthorn defeats Nystul and commands him to not use the Spell of Rejoining or face death. Nystul refuses, but right before Blackthorn is about to deliver the finishing blow, Nystul's granddaughter, Gavrielle, knocks out Blackthorn and Nystul is freed. Nystul returns to Castle Britannia with Lord Blackthorn under his power.
Lord Blackthorn awakens in the king's quarters. Nystul and Lord British have casted a magical binding spell to the castle that not only traps Blackthorn but also disables Blackthorn's use of mana. Blackthorn then uses his own physical strength to muster a spell that would try and convince Lord British through his dreams. This greatly weakens Blackthorn but to no success. Lord British and Nystul leave for the mythical place of Stonegate to conduct the Binding. Soon afterwards, Exedur frees Blackthorn and they make their escape from Castle Britannia. Lord Blackthorn tells Exedur they have much work to do.
