MOOSE NOTEBOOK
No, not that kind of Moose!
Management
of
Organizational
Skills
Everyday

What
is a MOOSE Book? It is a 3-ring binder
notebook, put together by the teacher, that houses EVERYTHING the students
and parents need to keep up with what is going on at school. No more
wrinkled papers in the bottom of bookbags. No more lost notes, newsletters
or calendars. No more searching the house to find paper to write
the teacher a note. Everything is in one notebook!
Why is
it important to have? This notebook
helps students to establish good organizational skills and responsibility- skills that can carry on throughout their time in school.
Take a look at our classroom's alternate version of the Moosenotebook!
The M.O.O.S.E. Notebook (Management of Organizational Skills Everyday) contains the sections listed below. Entries are made daily so please look at all of the sections on a regular basis.
Homework and Spelling Word Lists
The left pocket of this folder will contain homework to be done and turned in the next day. Please help your child remember to put homework back in this folder when finished or when he/she is not working on it. Each week your child receives a new assignment sheet, which is to stay in the left pocket and removed on the weekend.
The right pocket of this folder will contain your child's weekly spelling lists. We will clean out this pocket in school at the end of each marking period. Please leave them the lists in the pockets when you are through helping your child practice.
Rainbow Folder
Important Papers from School
Notes from school go in the right hand pocket. This is usually information for you to read. Some notes need to be returned the next day.
Super Duper Work
Papers for you to view and then keep at home go in the left hand pocket of the folder
Read Across the United States
This is our at home reading program. Included will be your childs reading log to help your child keep track of his/her nightly reading. Students are asked to read 20 minutes a night. Please help your child keep track of his/her reading every night and initial the reading log.
WHY READ?
Calendars and Newsletters
This is where students will keep their homework assignment chart, which is to be filled out and checked daily. Newsletters about upcoming events and topics of study will be put in this section. Other calendars such as our class schedule, city school calendar, and lunch menu will go in this part of the notebook.
There is also a monthly calendar for our snack schedule. Your child is designated certain time during each month to bring in a healthy snack for the class. The day before each child is to bring their snack, a bag will be sent home to put the snack into as a reminder. If there is a problem with bringing in a snack for the class, we will use our in class reserves, which will need to be replenished.
Zipper Pouch
This pouch is for lunch money and for any notes such as absentee excuses. This section will also be for notes between you and me. Please check it daily and I will do the same for communications from you.
Poetry Journal
In class we usually learn a poem every week (or two), at the end of the week they get a copy of the poem to put into their MOOSE notebook. The students will then illustrate or add graphics to the poem.
Classroom Policies & Procedures
In this section we will keep all classroom procedures, rules, and discipline plan. Any second grade information that pertains to the curriculum or policies goes into this section of the notebook.
It is your childs responsibility to be sure that they bring home their notebook each day and bring it back with them to school the following day. I will be checking their notebooks each day.
Heres where you can help! Please schedule a 30 minute time each day for your child to study spelling, math facts, and complete homework. Children need routine and structure to be successful. Before your child begins his/her nightly assignments, check his/her notebook for the following:
Be sure your child is getting homework assignments and Responsibility Record each day.
Check for notes home. Read them, respond if directed, and place them back in the front pocket.
Work to be completed-homework and class work.
After checking, please dont forget to sign your name on the appropriate place.
If your child is bringing home a lot of work to complete or is spending more time than expected on homework, this could be a sign that he/she is not using time wisely at school or home.
If you have any questions about the M.O.O.S.E notebook, please contact me.
Respectfully,
Mrs. Dodd
