The Seleucids being generals would form a strong military, and having a very large empire, would have to bring in mercenaries from other countries to supplement their own empire to keep what they had. The empire and kings would signify a constant decline as parts would revolt, and in little more than 200 years, the empire would only contain Syria, and by 63 CE, when the Hasmonean dynasty started, the last Seleucid died off and their empire was gone. The empire had 2 main formsof religion, the pagan greek, and the Zoroastrian dualistic (Good versus Evil) that in some ways would play an interesting part in Gnostic theology in the 1 century and 2nd century CE

There is a good link of information to look at this empire at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seleucid_Empire
