There is a good amount written on Herod and the nature of their heritage. Most of the interesting things go with their heritage as Idumeans. The Idumeans are the old edomites who left their capital of Petra and settled Judean lands during the Babylonian expulsion. The Nabateans then moved from northern Arabia into the old Edomite lands. The idumeans were told by the Maccabees to either convert or leave. Most converted, and became semi-accepted into society. The Herodian line is Idumean and so therefore they are Edomites. The line married into the Hasmonean line, which made Herod the great the ruler and the two lines generally were well mixed together. Later with the Jewish revolt, edomite/idumean nation ceased to exist, as the idumeans did send over 20,000 warriors to help fight Titus.
