| It Ain't Pretty...yet | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| * 4/05-Car has been given to a new owner: My youngest brother, Gordon! In the spring of 2001 I purchased one of the loves of my life. It was a bright red 1992 SCX that a family up the street had owned. They purchased it new from Raymond Chevy-Olds in Antioch, Illinois and used the car for daily commuting. Ever since they brought it home I would hear it rumble up the hill in front of our house and grin. It looked and sounded menacing...but not scary. More like the little kid that bullies pick on that knows kung-fu. When the family decided it was time to sell the car, my father gave me the tip-off, and I came home from college with cash in my hand. It seems the car had not been able to run for reasons unknown to them. (I think they just wanted it out of their hair.) Either way it was coming home with me. |

| I drove the car off and on for about a year making small improvements until the head gasket finally went. It was its second head gasket job according to the original owner, and based on its less than fabulous condition I would say they didn't do it right. It is a clean car, with little rust and not many signs of abuse. Instead I hate to admit this car was neglected and viewed strictly as a commuter car. Its 126,000 miles were hard-earned, with a mixture of Lake County traffic and expressway chaos. In case you're wondering why the front bumper is trashed, their 16 year-old daughter drove the car for about a year before tearing the lower front spoiler on a curb and hitting a stop sign... So since 2002, the car has remained in storage with a fresh coil housing cover, plugs, belts, fitlers, alternator, new radiator tanks, new catalytic converter, good tires, and BAD head gasket. For all I know it could even be a cracked head. We'll find out once my little brother and my father tear into the car. I have given the car to my youngest brother to love & cherish. He has as much appreciation for the car as I do, and between him, my father, and my parts stash... we can make something beautiful out of it! We've already started stockpiling rare and replacement parts and the restoration will begin soon! Hold onto those Oldsmobiles! |
