Dad has owned this car since the fall of 1997. He usually comes across some of the nicest sheetmetal in Illinois and this car is no exception. It hails from sunny California, and spent most of its life on the west coast until 1983 when it moved to Illinois. There is no rust of rot on the car whatsoever!
Here is what the car looked like when it was first brought home. The Appliance mag rims, a 327, Thrush glass packs, and a set of air shocks just screamed "I'm a 70's hot rod". The look didn't last too long
The search for an original 265 and Powerglide to replace the 327 and Turbo-Hyrdamatic 400 began instantly. Dad went to work and hunted one down close to home. Over my college breaks I would come home and help pull motors, rip off bumpers and fenders, and install brake lines. The car came apart very easily...it just didn't want to go back together that way! After 3 years of hard labor and long weekends the Bel Air is pretty much finished. It could use a coat of paint to be perfect, and a little interior work might be in the near future as well. Dad is really just enjoying it as a driver for now. That's a good thing because after all, these were meant to be driven!
