Where were you in 1986?
If you were like me, you were probably eating Rice Chex and watching Nickelodeon...
To tell you the truth, I was 7 years old. My favorite hobbies at that time were eating paste in Mrs. Borjeski's second grade class and watching HBO and MTV in my spare time. I remember most of that year, especially the horrible Challenger space shuttle disaster and that lovely Chernobyl thing. I also remember a February day a few years later when my parents purchased their 1986 Chevy Cavalier RS convertible.

ad found the car at the local Chevrolet dealer one cold Illinois day that year and thought it would make the perfect car for my mother. It was chilly outside, and not convertible weather. Perfect time to buy a convertible!
I remember when my mom and dad went to test drive it. My brother Kyle and I were in the back seat, sitting in the parking lot of the local Ben Franklin Crafts store waiting for my mom to run in and grab something. My dad really wanted to put the top down, (just to do it), and he did. Kyle and I were all smiles. It was the first time we had ever been in a convertible! I still remember watching the black roof disappear over our heads as we tried to catch falling snowflakes on our tounges. It was just one of those moments that will always stick with me. It was clear to my parents that night that they had to buy this car.
The Cavalier became my mother's sole mode of transportation for the next 7 years. She drove it year-round to her work, and carted her family around in it on the weekends. We all fell in love with the little blue ragtop, and constantly drove around with the air blowing through our Fantastic Sam-spiked hair, listening to Ah-Ha, Def Leopard, Depeche Mode, and the B-52's. Yes, the late 80's were good to us. That Cavalier was an important part of those fond memories.
