GM J-body Convertibles and Automobile Specialty Company.
After taking a hiatus in factory convertible production in 1976, General Motors finally announced plans to sell a convertible version of its FWD E-body Buick Rivera for the 1982 model year. These automobiles returned the ragtop to the GM lineup and impressed many hungry buyers, but the General would not produce them at the factory. Instead the cars would be produced as coupes and then converted into a droptop by subcontractor and orignal equipment manufacturer Automobile Specialty Company.

After performing sunroof installations in many cars out in sunny California, Ford Motor Company executives took notice, and Prechter was granted a contract to perform 'factory' approved installations in 500 1968 Mercury Cougar XR-7's. After moving to Detroit in 1968, American Sunroof took a more active role in automobile production.
